Brighton & Hove City Council will begin work in the coming weeks on an Active Travel Scheme along the A259 between Hove and Portslade.
The scheme will improve cycling, pedestrian and road infrastructure between Fourth Avenue and the cityβs western boundary and creating safer and more accessible journeys for everyone.
The improvements include:
A separated two-way cycle lane
New pavements and bus stops
Safer, better aligned crossings and junctions
New loading bays and disabled parking bays
A work compound will be set up on the south side of the A259 opposite Westbourne Villas.
Work will begin with the section between Fourth Avenue and Hove Street. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout. When work takes place immediately in front of properties, contractors will liaise with occupants and owners in advance.
The project follows extensive public consultation and detailed design work, with the scheme receiving strong support from residents and stakeholders.
As work gets underway, the council is also encouraging people to have their say on plans to extend the scheme east from Fourth Avenue to West Street in Brighton.
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said:
Itβs fantastic to see construction starting on this important scheme, which will transform how people travel along one of the cityβs busiest corridors.
Design matters. We carefully considered the space to develop a design that is accessible and keeps our city moving. The A259 Hove to Portslade Active Travel Scheme will provide safer routes for people walking, wheeling and cycling, improve accessibility and crossings and create a more attractive and welcoming space for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
This is a significant investment in the cityβs transport network and an important step towards making it easier for people to choose sustainable ways of getting around.
Weβre also keen to hear peopleβs views on proposals to extend these improvements eastwards from Fourth Avenue to West Street in Brighton. Iβd encourage everyone to take part in the consultation and help shape the future of travel along the A259.
The scheme will be delivered in phases to help minimise disruption and maintain access for residents, businesses and visitors wherever possible.

The consultation is now open and feedback will help inform plans for the next stage of improvements along the city's seafront corridor.
